Initially painkillers and anti-inflmmatory medicines ,sterold injections into the joint along with physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles around the joint may help reduce pain and improve mobility .Use a brace/walker may sometime be useful.
When the pain becomes chronic and the mobility significantly limited, with discomfort even at rest joint replacement is an option which reduce or eliminate the pain and improve the mobility allowing a better quality of life.
The hip and knee joints are the weight bearing joints in the body and are subject to a lot of wear and tear especially if a person is overweight (this accelerates the damage).Hence these are the most commonly repalced joints.
Shoulder and other joints are also replaced but less Artificial joints(Prostheses)may be
CEMENTED :
commonly used in elderly with porotic bones. The Prosthesis is joined to the bone by epoxy cement allowing faster healing .Commonly used in hip and knee replacement.
NON CEMENTED :
1) here the (Prostheses) has a fine mesh of holes on its surface .Bone has to grow
into the Prostheses and hence healing takes longer. It is used in younger patients with good bone quality
.Non Concerned problem res .This is sometimes used in shoulder replacement.
2) The prostheses are made of metal (Cobalt chromium or titanium) and high density polyethylene.
Prostheses available nowdays are of excellent quality-inert,durable and long lasting.
However they too undergo wear and tear and with time (15-20 years)may have to be replaced.
